Innovation Week on Orange Island: Day 3

For the third day of Innovation Week, we’ll look into communications devices and host a special “Show and Tell” session about… innovation. This event is open to every developer who’d like to make a demo of his/her innovative project.

Wednesday October 1st

12PM SLT : Innovative Communications Devices

Moderator: Tara5 Oh
Speakers: Beyers Sellers, Chase Marellan (Chatbridge), Kevni Koolhaven (Learning Tree International)

Tara5 Oh
In addition to being a prominent blogger, Tara5 Oh (Tish Shute in RL) is interested in the most innovative aspects of virtual worlds and especially those that can make our experience more open, interoperability for instance.
She describes her dream as a day when “on grid folks… and off grid entrepreneurs… will work together to reinvent the global trading and communication.”

Beyers Sellers
Professor Robert Bloomfield (aka Beyers Sellers in SL) is Professor of Management and Professor of Accounting at the Cornell University  Johnson Graduate School of Management. In addition to that, he is an avid developer of game-like financial market simulation software. It was Professor Bloomfield’s extensive previous experience in the use of simulation software to study the various effects of regulatory policies that ultimately brought his attention to the serious study of virtual worlds as natural economic simulations.
In September of 2007, Professor Bloomfield unveiled Metanomics, an innovative talk-show which discusses and dissects business and policy matters in the “Metaverse”.

Chase Marellan
from NMC
Chase Marellan (Nicholas Chase in real life) is a programmer, author, and principal at InterSection Unlimited, makers of a very interesting Second Life application called ChatBridge. This tool has been used since June for the weekly Metanomics show.
In Second Life, ChatBridge is a small mic device, which broadcasts any local chat in one sim to all of the other sims, so there is a common chat area across all sites. It also allows people to participate in that same chat area via a web site, without being logged into SL. Finally, Chase is co-authoring a book called ‘Platform Second Life’.

Kevni Koolhaven
Kevin Kell (aka Kevni Koolhaven in SL) is currently “Chief Technologist” at Learning Tree where he is responsible for investigating and developing technologies for use within Learning Tree or for delivery of its course content.
Learning Tree International is a world leader in hands-on training for Management and Technology Professionals. Virtually every major company and government agency has relied on Learning Tree to provide its managers and employees with the skills they need to succeed in their job functions.
Currently Kevin is investigating Virtual Worlds as a platform for distance learning or as a supplement to the existing classroom curriculum of his company.  Learning Tree Island in Second Life is its initial foray into this brave new world.

1.30PM SLT – Independent developers “Show & Tell”.

Join some very talented independent developers as they share & demo their innovative projects.
Robbie Kiama and Pauly Richez (Metalife) will demo the MetaHUD and Alexander Casassovici (SL: Ksso Yamauba) his head-tracking system VR-Wear.

MetaLife
Robbie Kiama became familiar with Virtual Worlds in 2005. He quickly understood that making a better use of virtual experiences is a work in progress. In 2008 he founded a Lithuanian startup called metaLIFE with few likeminded friends.
MetaLIFE’s mission is to create a social platform, which connects residents across the metaverse. MetaLIFE’s aim is to create a platform which would make social interactions within virtual worlds.
The metaKIOSK is a virtual kiosk that consolidates products from vendors all over Second Life into one simple portal, making thousands of virtual products from all over the Second Life grid readily available in a single virtual location. metaLIFE’s kicked-off from October 2nd to 5th at Monogram Virtua’s Prime Convention Center on Monogramia Prime in Second Life.

VR WEAR
Alexander Casassovici (SL: Ksso Yamauba) is a French serial entrepreneur specialized in emerging web and communication technologies. He founded WaveStorm and Kamayo acquired by Streamezzo and started many personal projects such at SL-MESSENGER.

He is now focusing on his latest venture, VR-WEAR, which aims at providing new tools to bring interactivity, immersion and engagement to the virtual worlds. Alexander also writes on his personal blog, Mobitrends about the evolution of the mobile, web and consumer electronics industry. VR-WEAR  just released a modified version of the SL Viewer (downloadable here) which uses the PC’s webcam to analyse and recognize facial attitudes and motions and apply them live on the user’s avatar.
