Photography Class: Fade to Grey “SL Photo to B&W”

Meet us, Friday 12th of August, on Orange Island at 12PM SLT for our third Photo Session co-hosted by Orange-Island and Koinup.

This time we are proud to welcome Kali Meads. Kali will show us how to create some amazing Black & White Second Life pictures using Photoshop.

Who is Kali Meads?
I can’t really explain who Kali Meads is without explaining what Neat tricks is. It’s a SL parcel and was originally a brain child of Kali and Mags Indigo. They wanted to create a space where people could get help and learn things within a virtual life without being charged for it over and over again.

So Kali is not really one person, she’s a collective of like minded individuals who have been involved in Neat tricks through the time and is an avatar who represents this idea within SL. In RL Neat tricks operates in the same way and is run by Scot and Kali (aka Nicki) and is due its first RL art show in february next year inside a RL theatre used for a custom build within SL.

Is your background related to photography?
My background is one of art and psychology. I have always been interested in art and the work of people like Francis Bacon and the surrealists made me interested in psychology and in turn the art informs my design work. The two I believe are very inter-twinned. Scots background lies in photography and we combine our skills to do what we do.

How did you learn taking pictures in SL?
Now this a question I sometimes wonder about myself…to be honest i can’t remember. SL was something that I picked up as I journeyed a long. I think the photography aspect came from the custom building aspect and the custom building aspect was informed by the photography side.

What’s the best photography trick that someone gave you in SL?
All you need is imagination! (how cheesy lol)

Are there any SL artists you particulary admire?
There are so many I admire, art is like Ice-Cream, it just depends on what mood you are in. In RL I love the work of Andy Warhol, Basquit, Keith Harring and David Lachapelle. In SL I love the work of Cala Rossini, Kasabian Beck, Keiko Morigi and all those at my gallery as I write this.

Which are your favorite photo-related destinations in SL?
I was really blown away by La Reve recently, I also love SICK, R.E.C, Black Swan and anything slightly and surreal, like hotel DARE and Arthole. Both kinda cool :)

What photo-related initiative would you like to see in SL that hasn’t been done yet?
I would love to see a place where photography is taught in SL like the way they teach in the Ivory Tower. I would also like to see SL models paid for what they do, they spend so much and get paid little. Also possibly an idea of photographers guild, where they trade tips, set a price limit… to make sure quality work is done I guess.

What are your upcoming projects?
I’m working for RL company utilising shots from SL for their website and continuing to do photography, promote artists at the Gallery, create more in the learning center for photograpy, continue custom building and have a good time lol (not necessarly in this order).
