Photo Session transcript: shadows in Second Life

Here’s another transcript, this time about last week’s Photo Session. Lordfly Digeridoo had a very interesting presentation about shadows in Second Life, including how to install and configure the right client. Towards the end are some of Lordfly’s videos that demonstrate the power of this new feature.

If you would like to include shadows in your photos and machinimas, look no further and click through!

[12:35] Lordfly Digeridoo: hello
[12:35] Natty Foggarty: welcome Lordfly ;)

Linden Lab Release Candidate 1.23 versus Boy Lane’s viewer

[12:38] Natty Foggarty: hey does everyone have the proper client ?
[12:38] Natty Foggarty: you should download the test one
http://secondlife.com/support/downloads.php

[12:39] Lordfly Digeridoo: actually, it’s way easier to use in Boy Lane’s viewer, and has more options
[12:39] Lordfly Digeridoo: the techniques I did in the video you can’t do with the RC client

http://my.opera.com/boylane/blog/shadow-viewer-1-23-windows-and-linux

[12:40] Lordfly Digeridoo: when you have it installed, follow the directions on how to launch it exactly, otherwise it goes boom. Basically you just do start –> run –> “C:\Program Files\ShadowViewer\Shadow Viewer.lnk”"

[12:41] Bunny Tomorrow: well i herd it will give lots of more lag?:P
[12:41] Lordfly Digeridoo: yes, and most computers can’t run it at all sadly
[12:41] Lordfly Digeridoo: you need an Nvidia 8800 or better

[12:42] Bunny Tomorrow: well if we use the shadows? can we take away them again?
[12:42] Lordfly Digeridoo: yes
[12:42] Lordfly Digeridoo: just like any other feature

[12:42] Bunny Tomorrow: ok and then we dont get lagg?:P
[12:42] Lordfly Digeridoo: yup… just like changing “draw distance”
[12:43] Bunny Tomorrow: i have no idea what that is
[12:43] Lordfly Digeridoo: graphics settings…?

[12:49] Lordfly Digeridoo: shadows make this place look great. Not to say it doesn’t already. Shadows are like meth… very addicting

[12:55] Cienega Soon: do we need to download and relog with it?
[12:55] Kali Meads: aww i thought you were going to be talking about a hack in the rc 1.23
[12:55] Lordfly Digeridoo: i highly recommend the boy lane viewer… the SL RC Candidate 1.23 viewer does NOT have all the features
[12:55] Lordfly Digeridoo: plus it’s much harder to turn on and off
[13:01] Mescaline Tammas: too many avs for shadows!!
[13:01] Saijanai Kuhn: 35 in-sim
[13:01] Lordfly Digeridoo: perfect timing to ruin the show too :P
[13:01] Lordfly Digeridoo: i have shadows off actually :P
[13:01] Lordfly Digeridoo: I’ll talk about that shortly

No shadows for Mac, except bootcamping ?

[13:02] lumir Beleza: and for mac ???
[13:01] Saijanai Kuhn is running a Mac and can’t seem to enable shadows in Windows mode
[13:02] Toxic Menges: I have to use Kirsten for my shadows in bootcamp ..or else snapshots don’t work
[13:02] Natty Foggarty: nope unfortunately
[13:02] Natty Foggarty: no mac version
[13:03] Mescaline Tammas: kirsten has done a mac viewer no?
http://armyof4.com/Kirstenlee/Public%20Viewers/Apple%20Mac/
[13:03] Cinnamon Forzane: its an addon, not a replace for the SLO client?
[13:03] lumir Beleza: i tried with the kirsten viewer

[13:03] Lordfly Digeridoo: there is no mac version… you can make do with KirstenLee’s shadow viewer or the SL RC 1.23 viewer, but they don’t have all the features

[13:04] Lordfly Digeridoo: and fair warning, you really do need a beefy card for this… Nvidia 8800 is the absolute minimum
[13:04] Saijanai Kuhn: does the ATI 2600 work, do you know/
[13:04] Saijanai Kuhn: ?
[13:05] Lordfly Digeridoo: not sure… when did you buy it and was it top of the line when you did?
[13:06] Saijanai Kuhn: is standard on the new Macs. I’ve tried to enable it when I boot windows, but haven’t been able to get it to work. Was wondering if I was wasting my time or just doing it wrong

[13:06] Lordfly Digeridoo: eh… if you’re BootCamping chances are it’s not going to work, honestly
[13:06] Toxic Menges: bootcamp is fine for me

[13:06] Lordfly Digeridoo: shadows are very, VERY experimental, and thus prone to crashing

[13:06] Sonatrix Dench: I have a GeForce 7250 LE?
[13:06] Lordfly Digeridoo: there’s zero support for them, really

[13:06] Lordfly Digeridoo: Geforce 7250 won’t work at all
[13:06] Sonatrix Dench: Sorry 7350
[13:06] Lordfly Digeridoo: 8800 is the lowest card that can even try
[13:06] Mescaline Tammas: i don’t get tree shadows (from alphas) on a radeon 4870 but otherwise its good
[13:07] Lordfly Digeridoo: my 7600 card just made a sad face whenever i attempted
[13:07] Lowe Runo: 8800 GT
[13:07] Aebleskiver Thibedeau: Is it worth upgrading to just a 9600gt?
[13:07] Toxic Menges: I am on a 9400 and its fine
[13:07] Lowe Runo: omg have to go get another
[13:07] Lordfly Digeridoo: well, i upgraded to an 9800 GT… it plays all modern games fine and plus i get shadows
[13:07] Aki Shichiroji: it’s fine on the 250s. awesome running two SLI :D
[13:07] Aebleskiver Thibedeau: I’d have to upgrade the whole system to do 9800

[13:07] Cienega Soon: i have 8800 and im seeing black blobs on avies on other section of floor
[13:07] Lordfly Digeridoo: cienega: yeah, bug with av impostors… turn off av impostors in graphics

[13:08] Honour McMillan: I have an 8800 and I’m OK so far – but have never found the shadow “button” so haven’t tried that yet
[13:08] Cienega Soon: ok
[13:08] Tuxedoe Karu: so if i download this, will it automatically be used when I log into SL, or will i have a choice between viewers?
[13:08] Lordfly Digeridoo: okay, so, for those of you using BOY LANE’s viewer (the one we linked to)
[13:08] Honour McMillan: you’ll have a second icon on the screen – you choose which you use
[13:08] Lowe Runo: mine is tuned up 20% with riva tuner

Settings for Boylane viewer

[13:08] Lordfly Digeridoo: go to edit –> preferences, then go to graphics

[13:08] Mescaline Tammas: Ctrl P
[13:08] Lordfly Digeridoo: turn on bump mapping, basic shaders, atmospheric shaders, and water reflections
[13:09] Lordfly Digeridoo: then, click the hardware options
[13:09] Lordfly Digeridoo: enable Vertex Buffer, OpenGL Frameb uffer, and per-pixel lighting
[13:09] Lordfly Digeridoo: then click ok, then click apply

[13:09] Zage Farman: does this work for macs?
[13:10] Toxic Menges: in bootcamp zage

[13:09] Lordfly Digeridoo: i doubt it
[13:10] Mescaline Tammas: not yet
[13:10] Honour McMillan: kk brb it doesn’t recognize my 8800
[13:10] Lordfly Digeridoo: i only have a windows pc

[13:10] Balduin Aabye: i can not run the shadow viewer???
[13:10] Lordfly Digeridoo: IF it works (no guarantee it does, you should notice a precipitous drop in framerate and shadows
[13:10] Jonit Ivory: and no antialiasing :(

[13:10] Lordfly Digeridoo: i mean really, with a crowd of 30-40, shadows are going to eat any card
[13:11] Zage Farman: i tried it with the kirsten viewer and nothing happened
[13:11] Lordfly Digeridoo: BUT, for machinima and photography, it can’t be beat

Settings for Kirsten’s viewer

[13:11] Lordfly Digeridoo: kirsten doesn’t have it in the menu… it’s in the debug menu and i forget which settings to do
[13:11] Zage Farman: yes but her refers one to the sequence
[13:11] Aki Shichiroji: renderdeffered and renderuseFBO, i believe
[13:11] Lordfly Digeridoo: yar, those
[13:11] Toxic Menges: renderdeferred to false, then renderusefbo to true then renderdeferred to true again

[13:11] Zage Farman: exactly

[13:11] Saijanai Kuhn: Macs don’t support the OpenGL options. Not sure what the cutoff is for Macs running in bootcamp mode
[13:11] Zage Farman: nah
[13:12] Zage Farman: ill just have to wait

[13:12] Cienega Soon: ok second time to crash .. is it because 8800 is not enough?
[13:12] Lordfly Digeridoo: cinega: who knows, like i said, it’s experimental

Shadows rendering

[13:12] Lordfly Digeridoo: in any case, what you’ll see if it works…
1) shadows casting from the sun (most noticeable outside, or through windows)
2) shadows casting directly onto the avatar (dramatic!)
3) shadows casting from trees (both linden trees and fancy ones)
4) you’ll also see very, very subtle effects like what’s called SSAO lighting… basically it shades the edges of all inside corners, making everything look more real without you really noticing

[13:13] Mescaline Tammas: try it somewhere on your own too here is not going to run well with all these avs
[13:13] Aki Shichiroji: it ran ok on my 8800. i did find doing certain things was an issue… like camming around a lot, having a large draw distance, and camming in on bright lights
[13:14] Lordfly Digeridoo: i defer to natty for a second… he’s the host, anyway :)

Introduction to the Photo Session

[13:14] Natty Foggarty: cool thanx Lordfly Hello everyone! Thanks for joining us for this week’s Photo Session. I’d like to briefly introduce our group.
[13:14] Natty Foggarty: Orange Island and Koinup partnered on organizing events for the Second Life Photographers.

[13:15] Natty Foggarty: We have mainly classes about crucial techniques (windlight, post-processing, inworld tools…)

[13:15] Natty Foggarty: I’ll let Edo introduce the new Koinup Community Manager, SophiaAngelique Larnia, known as Maggg on koinup.
[13:15] edo Jay: Hi everybody, thank you for coming! It’s always a great pleasure to collaborate with Orange Island, thanks guys! Before starting with the class about shadows in SL. Iid like to introduce you a new entry in Koinup…
[13:16] edo Jay: now we have a community manager! here your are… SophiaAngelique Larnia (aka Magggg on Koinup)!
[13:17] SophiaAngelique Larnia: Hello guys *___*
[13:17] edo Jay: she is in our staff, for any information about Koinup you can now ask also to her…

[13:17] edo Jay: and now enjoy the shadows in SL! ;)

[13:18] Natty Foggarty: Before starting, I’d like to announce you that we have a group on Koinup.
http://www.koinup.com/group/photosessions/
[13:18] Natty Foggarty: This group aims to gather all the pics taken during our events. So, feel free to add any photo-reportage of today’s session on the group.

[13:18] Natty Foggarty: Today, we are very glad to host the great SL wizzard Lordfly Digeridoo. Lordfly Digeridoo is a well known urban planner in Second Life, who has just made a machinima that shows how breathtaking the new shadow effects are. The session will consist in a Q&A about how to make the best use of shadows in SL.
[13:19] Natty Foggarty: So, we have also some important avatars as Opensource Obscure and Mescaline Tammas
[13:20] Natty Foggarty: I know Lordfly will make sure everybody can see shadows
[13:20] Lordfly Digeridoo: i’ll try, anyway… i’m not a tech guy. :)
[13:20] Natty Foggarty: Have a good session everyone ;))

Photo Session with Lordfly Digeridoo

[13:20] Lordfly Digeridoo: okay, so i assume everyone that CAN use shadows has it enabled by now? either with boy lane’s or kirsten’s or the SL RC 1.23 viewer?
[13:21] Lordfly Digeridoo: (if you can’t, don’t worry, i probably won’t be giving too many examples on stage, just too many avs)
[13:21] Cienega Soon: i have boylane enabled
[13:21] Rocksea Renegade: still not got it yet, using the rc viewer

Settings for the Linden Lab RC 1.23

[13:21] Opensource Obscure: RC is ok for basic shadows
[13:23] Opensource Obscure: quick recap to enable basic shadows: enable Advanced Menu, open Debug Settings, turn on Render usefbo, then turn on RenderDeferred
[13:21] Lordfly Digeridoo: agreed, opensource
[13:21] Lordfly Digeridoo: boy lane has the most features, but it tends to be crashalicious

Lordfly Digeridoo’s machinima

[13:22] Lordfly Digeridoo: Natty has the link to the machinima I did demoing some of the features
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h4S2gqZaxA0

[13:23] Lordfly Digeridoo: quick note about the machinima: everything was done in-world… no post-processing or anything

[13:26] Natty Foggarty: I love the music btw
[13:26] Lordfly Digeridoo: yes, apeonaut is amazing free music
http://www.apeonaut.com/

[13:26] Lordfly Digeridoo: yeah, so let me run through real quick what you’re seeing in the video
[13:26] Lordfly Digeridoo: at the beginning, you’re seeing the “shadows in SL” texture being projected against a brick wall
[13:27] Lordfly Digeridoo: it’s moving courtesy of a prim that’s “projecting” the texture onto the surface
[13:27] Lordfly Digeridoo: much like a slide projector
[13:27] Lordfly Digeridoo: next, it transitions to my ugly avatar standing on a box, with the shadow of me against the wall
[13:28] Lordfly Digeridoo: again, it’s using a “projected” spotlight texture, and my av is blocking the light much like it would in real life
[13:28] Lordfly Digeridoo: once i get my groove on, it switches to some rotating spotlights… same principles.. a soft white texture projected from the spinning spotlight prims
[13:29] Lordfly Digeridoo: in all actuality I’m only using one small feature of the shadows in that view… that of texture projection
[13:29] Opensource Obscure notes this was made indoor – not possible with the RC client right now, isn’t? BoyLane viewer or self-built viewer from sources is needed for this
[13:29] Lordfly Digeridoo: as far as i know, only Boy Lane’s viewer can do that
[13:29] Lordfly Digeridoo: yes, there are no sun/moon shadows on this machinima

[13:29] Lordfly Digeridoo: in 99% of your SL shadow experiences, you’ll only honestly really notice in two situations :
[13:30] Lordfly Digeridoo: 1) when you’re outside and the sun is casting shadows on everything (really beautiful at sunset)
[13:30] Lordfly Digeridoo: 2) inside, when the sun is pushing light through an alpha texture window onto a floor or something

[13:29] Opensource Obscure: there are instructions on the official wiki about how to compile a viewer from sources, but it’s not the easiest thing ever.
https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Get_source_and_compile is the starting point
http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Microsoft_Windows_Builds

[13:31] Lordfly Digeridoo: if you’re in a dark room with no windows, you most likely won’t notice any shadows
[13:31] Lordfly Digeridoo: it’ll just be darker. :)
[13:31] Lordfly Digeridoo: and also note that normal SL hardware lights do NOT project shadows
[13:32] Lordfly Digeridoo: they used to, but i guess it turned clients into pea soup or something

[13:32] Sonatrix Dench: So only the sun?
[13:32] Lordfly Digeridoo: only the sun and the moon
[13:32] Lordfly Digeridoo: it’s not so bad
[13:32] Sonatrix Dench: Not so good for studio work.

[13:32] Lordfly Digeridoo: without any texture shading the shots look stunning, if i say so myself, and I’m a moron
[13:33] Lordfly Digeridoo: the trick is really knowing the limitations of the technology
[13:33] Lordfly Digeridoo: and of course, shadows work best with your traditional lighting/texturing tricks

Lordfly Digeridoo shows some pictures and explains some tweaks

[13:34] Lordfly Digeridoo: let me see if i can put an image up…
[13:35] Lordfly Digeridoo: there we go

[13:36] Lordfly Digeridoo: yeah, that’s another thing… any shadow client is… REALLY unstable, don’t use it for day-to-day

[13:37] Lordfly Digeridoo: here’s another photo, showing light streaming in from the windows
[13:37] Lordfly Digeridoo: another effect that i really appreciate that’s hard to see in most situations is what’s called SSAO…
[13:38] Lordfly Digeridoo: basically, the client automatically shades the edges of prims that would normally be shaded in real life (for instance, a corner in a room)
[13:38] Lordfly Digeridoo: no matter how bright your house lights are, corners in your rooms are going to be just a smidge darker than the rest of your house… SSAO simulates that, and rather well
[13:39] Lordfly Digeridoo: it’s an extremely subtle effect that really tricks your eye into believing the scene is more real than before
[13:39] Lordfly Digeridoo: and of course, most of the shadow client features are tweakable with various debug settings…
[13:40] Lordfly Digeridoo: shadow strength, SSAO size, etc. can all be tweaked, so I’m sure you photography ninjas can take some stunning shots
[13:40] Lordfly Digeridoo: if I can make a machinima in an hour, you professionals can do tons better, I’m sure of it :)

[13:40] Special Jewell: what debug settings can be done ?
[13:40] Mescaline Tammas: in advanced > debug settings > rendershadowblur
[13:40] Lordfly Digeridoo: well, i switched back to the regular client so i wouldn’t keep crashing…
[13:40] Lordfly Digeridoo: yes, that’s one of them
[13:41] Mescaline Tammas: this helps with the the edges a lot
[13:41] Lordfly Digeridoo: i think RenderSSAO has a few…
[13:41] Special Jewell: ty
[13:41] Lordfly Digeridoo: the joys of playing with experimental software, eh? :)

[13:41] Jonit Ivory: None of these clients seem to support antialiasing without falling over, you see this as a limitation?

[13:42] Lordfly Digeridoo: of course we all use SL, so what’s really different any other day? :P
[13:42] Lordfly Digeridoo: jonit: i’m the wrong guy to ask, I turn FSAA off all the time anyway… can’t really notice much of a difference
[13:42] Lordfly Digeridoo: but no, i wouldn’t think so… if you’re taking a photo, just take one at an absurd resolution

[13:42] Special Jewell: what is SSAO and FSAA ?
[13:43] Lordfly Digeridoo: i mean FSAA is basically just quadrupling your resolution and then slamming back down to your original resolution, so you cna do that manually
[13:43] Doubledown Tandino: text is on and multicolored :O)
[13:43] Lordfly Digeridoo: in photoshop or gimp

[13:43] Opensource Obscure: FSAA = aka “antialiasing”
[13:43] Lordfly Digeridoo: FSAA = full-screen anti-aliasing… i forget what SSAO stands for :)
[13:43] Lordfly Digeridoo: Super-Secret Awesome Optics. :P

[13:44] Opensource Obscure: “Screen Space Ambient Occlusion, an implementation of a ambient occlusion illumination in computer graphics”
[13:44] Al Sonic: screenspace ambient occlusion

[13:44] Lordfly Digeridoo: opensource for the win
[13:44] Opensource Obscure: wikipedia FTW !

What does cast shadows and what does not ?

[13:45] Lordfly Digeridoo: one thing i think you should be careful of is framing products like prefabs or whatnot in shadow client pics…
[13:45] Lordfly Digeridoo: if you have a picture of your primmed item all decked out in shadows, people will expect that

[13:45] Cinnamon Forzane: how does this all affect avi skin textures and overall look?
[13:46] Lordfly Digeridoo: good question… most of the time you don’t notice it much… but because the avatar can project a shadow onto itself now, you can get darker areas than what most are used to

[13:46] Lordfly Digeridoo: for instance, your nose can cast a shadow on your cheeks

[13:46] Lordfly Digeridoo: objects like ties, hats, etc. cast shadows, too
[13:46] Lordfly Digeridoo: if you have a huge sombrero, your avatar is in the shade, just like real life :)

[13:47] Cinnamon Forzane: so for modeling work, in studio, regular lights don’t work ?
[13:47] Lordfly Digeridoo: regular lights work like normal
[13:47] Lordfly Digeridoo: so they do not cast shadows or affect sun-given shadows at all
[13:47] Lordfly Digeridoo: actually, facelights look terrible in shadow clients
[13:47] Lordfly Digeridoo: you look like your head just exploded
[13:47] Mescaline Tammas: i have problems with my own shadow that a rebake solves for a few seconds
[13:47] Cienega Soon: so you can use lights in studio work to lighten the shadows on the face?
[13:48] Jonit Ivory: we blame Torley for facelights
[13:48] Cinnamon Forzane: omg, death to the facelights!

[13:48] Lordfly Digeridoo: flexi prims cast shadows just like everything else
[13:48] Lordfly Digeridoo: and sculpties
[13:48] Lordfly Digeridoo: if it’s solid, it’s casting a shadow

[13:48] Toxic Menges: Light onto avi’s through hair is fab with shadows
[13:49] Lordfly Digeridoo: yes, complex shapes like hair and tree foliage look AWESOME

[13:49] Opensource Obscure: a related problem is that everybody right now has a different lighting setting. Sim owners and builders would like to be able to set a default Atmospheric settings for their regions/buildings, so that people could look at them the same way they built them. But this is not possible yet – so…vote these JIRA issues:
http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-7677
http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-2736 and related ones

[13:49] Kfcito Capalini: and phantom objects?
[13:49] Lordfly Digeridoo: phantoms still look solid, thus shadows
[13:49] Cinnamon Forzane: this is going to change the portrait picture business lol

Flexi Sculties ?

[13:49] Jonit Ivory: only 8 vertices, don’t get too excited
[13:49] Al Sonic: 8×8 flexisculpts.

Shadows will affect furniture/texture business ?

[13:50] Lordfly Digeridoo: it’s really going to cause havok for people who bake shadows into builds
[13:50] Cinnamon Forzane: and this may change PS shadow masking, do it inworld in studio now
[13:51] Lordfly Digeridoo: it’s not so bad for furniture, like a table or shair
[13:51] Lordfly Digeridoo: chair even
[13:51] Cinnamon Forzane: you said it, the hottest selling textures now are all shadows embedded\
[13:51] Lordfly Digeridoo: it’s just one more thing to keep in mind when designing
[13:52] Cinnamon Forzane: this is really only a concern for photographers, at this level of hardwarre demand, general residents will not see shadows for a year or two lol but it will cleave the haves from the havenots in the photostudio business
[13:52] Toxic Menges: thats why those who can should do pics and machinima so people can see the potential
[13:52] Opensource Obscure agrees with cinnamon

Presets windlight w/shadows

[13:52] Mescaline Tammas: I made some windlight presets with shadows in mind, you can download them here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/mescalinetammas/3513305333/

[13:53] Lordfly Digeridoo: nice presets!
[13:53] Mescaline Tammas: thanks Toxic, its nice to know we can be looking at the same thing :))
[13:53] Lordfly Digeridoo: god, i wish the lindens would let estates do windlight settings…
[13:54] Menno Ophelia: that would be great
[13:54] Aebleskiver Thibedeau: default sucks
[13:54] Toxic Menges: the maj of my shadows pics I take with your presets .. and only sometimes mod them a little
[13:54] Cinnamon Forzane: then you would control the final experience factor

[13:54] Mescaline Tammas: yes please vote on the JIRA everyone its really doesn’t take long
http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-7677

[13:55] Cinnamon Forzane: stupid question, but would this ability allow us to fully control haze effects on our builds?
[13:55] Lordfly Digeridoo: with shadows? not really
[13:55] Opensource Obscure: cinnamon: the JIRAs ask for that
[13:55] Opensource Obscure: two separate but related issues.
[13:55] Cinnamon Forzane: ok Open, thanks
[13:55] Cinnamon Forzane: gotcha\
[13:56] Opensource Obscure adds something about hardware. You don’t really need a 2000 US$ to use shadows – a dual-core with a 50-100 US$ nvidia video card may be enough
[13:56] Opensource Obscure: i use a nvidia 9600gt
[13:56] Opensource Obscure: 50-60 US$ on ebay
[13:57] Opensource Obscure: your mileage may vary.
[13:57] Cinnamon Forzane: thanks Open, I think people need to hear that, get scared off to easily lol

Build your own viewer ?

[13:57] Opensource Obscure: I build from render-pipeline LL sources
[13:57] Opensource Obscure: that gives me indoor shadows, that is projected textures
[13:58] Lordfly Digeridoo: ooh
[13:58] Toxic Menges: would you release that to the public Open?
[13:58] Opensource Obscure: i can’t Toxic, I’m on Linux and can’t do it for Windows

[13:58] Cinnamon Forzane: In RL we always using lighting and shadows, then came to SL and learned how to do it all with lighting… gotta learn again
[13:58] Lordfly Digeridoo: i wish boy lane would update his, the viewer is pretty crashy
[13:58] Aki Shichiroji: it’s been a good month and a half :P we have been spoiled by the newer releases since then :P

[13:58] Opensource Obscure: here are the last sources
http://svn.secondlife.com/trac/linden/browser/branches/render-pipeline/doc/asset_urls.txt

[13:58] Jonit Ivory: maybe Boy could take from the http-texture viewer and merge
[13:59] Mescaline Tammas: i can’t get projected textures working on an ati card
[13:59] Opensource Obscure: projected textures features is still WAY bugged though. you need to re-set the textures at each object rez, and at each SL session.
[14:00] Aki Shichiroji: too bad those properties are not server side

[14:00] Opensource Obscure: special: you can follow these instructions :
https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Get_source_and_compile and use those sources links to build your own viewer

[14:00] Special Jewell: ok but no thanks :)
[14:00] Lordfly Digeridoo: yeah, projected textures aren’t saved server-side, you have to reset the settings every time.

[14:01] Opensource Obscure: also, building a viewer and releasing it to the public = lot of bureaucratical – legal burden, that’s why you don’t see many shadows viewer

[14:02] Mescaline Tammas: when are LL saying we’ll get them in the main viewers?
[14:02] Lordfly Digeridoo: boo legal burden
[14:02] Lordfly Digeridoo: mescaline: they haven’t
[14:02] Lordfly Digeridoo: so… 3-4 years probably ? Right after built-in animation overriders, web on a prim, and estate windlight controls

[14:03] Cinnamon Forzane: dont put away from oddles of shadow prims yet, shooters

[14:04] Aki Shichiroji: at the very least, it will be a debug function in 1.23 when it does come out as a main viewer

[14:04] Mescaline Tammas: about time too really XD
[14:05] Aki Shichiroji: i think it’s important to note that this is also in part helping the implimentation of adding alpha layers to avatars

[14:05] Aki Shichiroji: (since invisiprims fail in any shadow client)
[14:05] Lordfly Digeridoo: what do you mean fail?
[14:05] Aki Shichiroji: well.. they’re usuallyopaque
[14:06] Lordfly Digeridoo: i haven’t noticed that
[14:06] Opensource Obscure: also, Snapshots are broken when using shadows
[14:06] Aki Shichiroji: Yeah. would LOVE to take higher resolution shots with the RC
[14:06] Toxic Menges: yeah they are in the RC
[14:06] Aebleskiver Thibedeau: i thought that was only k17?
[14:06] Aki Shichiroji: for now, i am just using Jing
[14:06] Toxic Menges: Kirsten they are fine
[14:06] Mescaline Tammas: yes, no hi resolution shots :(

[14:07] Opensource Obscure: lordfly: did you try projecting the media parcel texture when a video is running on the parcel?
[14:08] Aki Shichiroji: Opensource> sounds like it ought to work

[14:09] Opensource Obscure: I’ll share some videos I made with shadows and projected textures:

[14:09] Opensource Obscure: note: always disable antialiasing in Preferences > Graphics > hardware when using shadows

[14:14] Toxic Menges: I just uploaded a bunch of shadow pics to koinup
[14:17] Toxic Menges: I just made a shadows group in Koinup :)
