Orange Island and the Nonprofit Commons are proud to present Nonprofit Week, from Monday, January 26th to Thursday, January 29th. We have a full line-up of brilliant presenters who have pioneered the work of utilizing virtual worlds for nonprofits. Full schedule below. All times are Pacific Standard Time (Second Life time). Monday, January 26th

(12:00PM) Metanomics Show: Kids Building Digital Bridges

beyers Virtual worlds transport young people outside their neighborhoods and offer them chances for creative collaboration across physical, generational and cultural boundaries. Metanomics host Robert Bloomfield investigates the novel ways that kids use virtual worlds to break down barriers with Barry Joseph of Global Kids and David Klevan of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. On the Spot, Daniel Voyager discusses the future of Teen Second Life, fresh from his graduation to the main grid, and educator Chris Collins provides closing commentary.

(1:00PM) Anika Pastorelli: Impact of Nonprofits in SL on Real World Causes

anika This presentation addresses a study conducted to assess the impact of nonprofits in SL on RL causes, resulting in a 50-page report that is now being used by nonprofits in SL for that purpose. Based on interviews with 12 NPC nonprofit representatives, this study examines the benefits and impact of operating in Second Life on their real-world causes as well as the challenges and opportunities for nonprofits in SL. The findings will help enhance the impact of nonprofits in SL on their real world missions, organizations and causes.

(1:30PM) Glitteractica Cookie: Nonprofit Commons

glitteractica Glitteractica, AKA Susan Tenby, of TechSoup and the curator of the Nonprofit Commons group, will talk about Nonprofit Commons and the resources that are available to nonprofit organizations in Second Life.

(2:00PM) Ricken Flow: HIV/AIDS outreach in Second Life

ricken The anonymity of Second Life and how it can foster improved communication. Collaboration with real life organizations to support a common goal. HIV/AIDS Resources in Second Life.

Tuesday, January 27th

(12:00PM) Coughran Mayo: Innovative Use of Virtual Worlds to Solve Real Life Problems

coughran A discussion of how Coughran’s non profit assessed the capabilities of Second Life, and created an innovative project to use the unique qualities of the virtual world to address a long-standing, worldwide problem in real life. Their successful competition for significant grant funding for this project will be outlined, along with their current activities and future plans.

(1:00PM) Rik Riel: Second Lives, Second Chances: the Metaverse and Global Kids’s Youth Development Model

rik Rik will present how Global Kids has approached virtual worlds from a youth development perspective, and how these digital spaces provide opportunities for civic engagement, user-generated media, and global connections.

(2:00PM) In Kenzo: Lightning And Collaborative Creativity

in Nonprofit organization creates diverse community arts programs, experiences and touring shows; how do we leverage many different networks for social change with a fluid and easy approach for everyone?

Wednesday, January 28th

(12:00PM) Namaara MacMoragh: Organizational Sustainability through Policy Governance

namaara Organizations are sustainable only to the extent that they can continue to create value. Policy Governance creates an atmosphere of clarity around responsibilities and accountability allowing boards and management to focus on the work at hand. Using technologies such as Second Life not only increases engagement and collaboration among organizations, but enhances board development opportunities.

(1:00PM) Louise Later: LARRS and the Virtual Guide Dog

louise Louise Later will be presenting with Virtual Helping Hands (VHH), a coalition of four groups, united in their mission to bring people who have disabilities into SL so everyone can enjoy what SL offers—entertainment, education, and employment. Louise directs the Virtual Guidedog group who are currently focusing on those who are visually or print-impaired, but those with real life physical disabilities also benefit from the free beta virtual guidedog, available at Wheelies.

(2:00PM) Nany Kayo: Virtual Native Lands

nany Presentation on the Virtual Native Lands project, beginning with our mission statement, expanding on the benefits of the project and strategies for accomplishing our goals. Description of the project’s history, challenges, plans for the upcoming year, goals for two years. Reiteration of the purpose of the Virtual Native Lands project and why it is uniquely suited to Second Life.

Thursday, January 29th
